Peter’s fundraising journey: strength, courage and determination

Inspired by his daughter Isabel, who has Angelman syndrome, Peter Darwood set himself six challenges in 2026 to raise awareness and funds for FAST UK.

Inspired by his daughter Isabel, who has Angelman syndrome, Peter Darwood set himself six challenges in 2026 to raise awareness and funds for FAST UK.

After completing the Trowse 10K and the virtual London Marathon, Peter’s plans were unexpectedly interrupted when he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in two lymph nodes in his neck.

Peter underwent six weeks of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, finishing treatment in July 2026. The treatment took an enormous toll on his fitness, and even walking to the shops left him out of breath.

Over the following seven weeks, Peter gradually rebuilt his fitness. On 13 September 2026, he completed Run Norwich in 1 hour and 12 minutes, even faster than he had expected.

At the time of writing, Peter was hoping to take on the Wymondham 10K in November 2026, which would bring his total to four challenges for the year.

Although his journey has looked very different from the one he originally planned, Peter’s courage and determination have been truly inspiring. Everyone at FAST UK is incredibly proud of what he has achieved and grateful for his support.

Peter’s fundraising supports our work towards treatments and a cure for Angelman syndrome. His employer also pledged to match the sponsorship he raises, helping his efforts make an even greater difference.

Thank you, Peter, for sharing your story and for everything you have done for FAST UK.
